1.Who We Are
The UAC App (“the App”) is the official mobile application of the Uganda AIDS Commission (“UAC”, “we”, “us”, “our”), a statutory body of the Government of Uganda established to coordinate the national response to HIV and AIDS. The App delivers public-health information, including HIV prevention guidance, national and regional statistics, news, frequently asked questions, stories and educational videos.
We are committed to protecting your privacy in accordance with the Data Protection and Privacy Act, 2019 (Uganda) and the Data Protection and Privacy Regulations, 2021.
2.Information We Do Not Collect
The App is designed to work without collecting personal information. Specifically, the App does not:
- Require or offer account registration, sign-in, or user profiles;
- Ask for your name, email address, phone number, or any contact details;
- Collect health information about you — the App only displays public-health content; it never asks about your HIV status or any medical condition;
- Access your location, contacts, camera, microphone, photos, or files;
- Use analytics, advertising, or behavioural-tracking services;
- Display advertisements of any kind.
3.Information Processed Automatically
Like any internet-connected application, a limited amount of technical data is processed so the App can function:
| Data | Where it is processed | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| IP address & standard request data (device type, request time) | Our content server, when the App fetches articles, statistics or images | Delivering content to your device; routine server operation and security logs |
| App preferences (e.g. whether you have completed onboarding) | Stored locally on your device only | Remembering your app setup between launches |
| Cached content (images, PDF documents) | Stored locally on your device only | Faster loading and reduced data usage |
Server logs are used solely for operating, securing and maintaining the service. They are not used to identify or profile individual users, are not shared for marketing, and are routinely deleted in the ordinary course of server administration. Locally stored data never leaves your device and is removed when you clear the App's storage or uninstall the App.
4.Third-Party Services & External Links
Some features of the App rely on third-party services that may process limited technical data under their own privacy policies:
- YouTube video player — educational videos in the App are streamed through YouTube's embedded player. When you play a video, YouTube (Google LLC) may collect data as described in the Google Privacy Policy. No video data is collected until you choose to play a video.
- Google Fonts — the App's typeface may be retrieved from Google's font service, which involves a standard web request from your device.
- External links — the “Get in Touch” section can open your device's email, phone dialler, browser or social-media apps (for example, to email or call UAC). Anything you send through those apps is governed by those apps and is composed entirely by you — the App itself transmits nothing on your behalf.
- Sharing — if you use the share feature, content is passed to the app you choose (e.g. WhatsApp) via your device's standard share function.
We encourage you to review the privacy policies of any third-party service or website you access through the App.
5.When You Contact Us
If you voluntarily contact UAC using the email address or telephone numbers shown in the App, we will receive the information you choose to provide (such as your email address and the content of your message). We use it only to respond to your enquiry and handle it in accordance with the Data Protection and Privacy Act, 2019.
6.Data Security
We apply appropriate technical and organisational measures to protect the systems that serve the App's content. Because the App collects no personal information, the risk to your personal data from using the App is inherently minimal. No method of internet transmission is 100% secure, but we work to safeguard our infrastructure against unauthorised access, alteration and destruction.
7.Children's Privacy
The App provides age-appropriate public-health education and is suitable for a general audience, including young people. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children. Since the App has no registration, forms or data-entry features, children cannot submit personal data through it. If you are a parent or guardian with concerns, please contact us using the details below.
8.Your Rights
Under the Data Protection and Privacy Act, 2019, you have the right to:
- Be informed about how your personal data is used;
- Access any personal data we hold about you (for App users, this is normally none);
- Request correction or deletion of personal data (for example, correspondence you have sent us);
- Object to processing of your personal data;
- Lodge a complaint with the Personal Data Protection Office (PDPO) of Uganda — www.pdpo.go.ug.
To exercise any of these rights, contact us using the details in Section 11.
9.Data Retention
- On your device: preferences and cached content remain until you clear the App's data or uninstall it — deletion is entirely in your control.
- Server logs: retained only as long as needed for operations and security, then deleted.
- Correspondence: messages you send to UAC are kept only as long as necessary to handle your enquiry and meet legal record-keeping obligations.
10.Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time — for example, if new features are added to the App. The “Last updated” date at the top of this page will always reflect the current version. If a future update introduces features that collect personal data, we will update this policy before those features launch and, where required, seek your consent.
